ELLA ÉS LA DONA QUE VE DEL MAR is a visual concert, with contemporary music and voice. Created and directed by Empara Rosselló, with Quentin Clemence on virtual shadows, Iván Santa on piano, and Empara Rosselló on vocals and performance.
It is poetic, interdisciplinary, and inclusive, speaking to us about caring for the environment, using new virtual shadow technologies.

The piece speaks to us about the sea, and about taking care of it. It is a shamanic, transformative concert, shaped by the different actions that appear throughout. The overture is a choreography with a fan that cleanses the space and energy. With chants based on texts by the poet Verdaguer, and musical composition and performance by Empara Rosselló. Ivan Santa accompanies the entire show on piano. A sword dance symbolizes renewal, cutting through all obstacles and being reborn into a better world. And a Barcelona legend from Catalan mythology: ‘The Old Man and the Sea’, inspired by Korean Pansori, a series of sung epic tales — in this case performed by Empara Rosselló, accompanied by the percussion of an authentic Korean drum, with Ivan Santa on drum.

The piece features virtual shadows developed by Quentin Clemence, based on the digital simulation of light behavior and the creation of three-dimensional shadows in a virtual environment. Using Blender 3D and other technologies, this system allows for the manipulation of light sources, objects, and screens to generate effects that are impossible in the real world—such as shadow refraction (caustics) and the bottle-of-light effect. This experimentation is combined with vocal compositions by Empara Rosselló, creating an innovative dialogue between music, light, and movement.

At the end of the performance, the audience takes part in what is called the exorcism: a group meditation where a series of harmonics are created to cleanse the sea. Empara Rosselló has performed this experience outside the context of the show on numerous occasions: in classes with students, with American colleagues from Fluxus in New York (who, interestingly, also practiced it), and even in a Romanesque church near Montserrat, where in the morning they “killed the pig,” and by night they seemed like “monks from Poblet.” It is an extraordinary experience.

The sea is essentially life—one of the most important parts of our planet. It has always been a part of Empara’s life; it is the oracle where she seeks answers, the horizon where she meditates, and it provides an existential calm that feels both close and distant. The sea is like a great mother that gives us life, joy, pleasure, and always welcomes us with generosity. We must love and care for it, reclaim the blue, transparent sea full of life—honoring it with all the respect and reverence it deserves.
